Beautiful Pilot Peak which rises to 10,716 - she was packed with snow when I visited in February 2004!

This 20 acres of land for sale is in northeastern Nevada near the Idaho/Utah/Nevada state lines. It's located approximately 3.5 miles northeast of the small town of Montello which has a population of about 480 people. The small town offers a gas/mini grocery store, post office and restaurant. Wendover is a larger town to the southeast on I80 and people in this valley commute there for work as well and groceries. The big town of Elko is about 1.5 hours to the west where you will find a hospital and major shopping. Salt Lake City is about two hours to the east and Reno sits on the other side of the state.

This land was once part of the large Gamble Ranch and that ranch sits to the north of the town of Montello and it is open range land. It is made up of two adjoining 10 acres parcels that we are offering together or separately. If you ever wanted to sell them separately no additional paperwork would be necessary as they are already subdivided! This is a very rural and remote valley well off the beaten path. It is a gorgeous valley with a few people scattered up and down it and with the town of Montello being the hub for the valley. I don't ever recall NOT seeing an antelope when I visited this valley and twice now I have seen a herd of wild horses roaming out here - absolutely stunning when you see them for your first time!

We have not had a chance to visit these two adjoining 10 acre parcels but we have been out to this area twice now. The photos taken of the snow in February 2004 were taken about 1.5 miles north and the photos taken in September 2005 were taken about 2 miles to the southwest so they should be a good representation of what the land looks like in two different seasons! The area sits about 1.5 miles east of highway 233, the main highway through the area as seen in the section map. There is a frontage road that runs along the east side of the railroad tracks that almost touches the section of land this property is located in. A section equals one square mile. You will find a road off highway 233 that crosses over the railroad tracks to access this frontage road about three miles to the southwest. You can see if in the maps. I played with google earth a bit and it looks like there are roads  out to the property and I see a faint road running along the half way section line (this is faint so I imagine overgrown) and you will need to view the property to know for sure. But at least there is an excellent road about 1/2 of a mile to the northwest and there are also dedicated easements to the property. I do see a few different power poles in the area and you would need to view the property and talk to the power company to see if they are poles you can connect to - I'm not sure.

This is a pretty part of the valley and there are a few people that live around Rhyolite Butte. I really enjoyed the first time I got to see this rock so up close - she is beautiful and such a unique shape. She sits about three miles to the northeast and is at the top of the Pilot Mountain Range. All the way down the valley to the south about 20 miles is the tallest point in the range, Pilot Peak, which sits at 10,716 feet and you can see the entire length of this mountain range from here! Across the valley to the west is the Toano Mountain Range. And sitting across the valley floor to the southwest is the small town of Montello and you can see her pretty groves of trees in the distance. The area is a gentle slope from the west down to the east as it falls down further to the valley floor and you can see this slope in a few of the photos.

The Pilot Mountains sit just a few miles to the east and you sure get some beautiful details in her mountain peaks! This valley is surrounded by an abundance of wildlife in two mountain ranges! The property is zoned for either a home or RV and I have many times seen hunters coming out of the mountains to the east! Enjoy! These next photos were taken about two miles to the southwest in September of 2005. My notes say there were awesome views of Rhyolite Butte all the way down to Pilot Peak.

That's Rhyolite Butte on the left side of the photo and Pilot Peak all the way down the valley on the right hand side. Rhyolite Butte is a very cool round shaped rock structure that is mesmerizing to look at up close!

AREA INFORMATION:

Update June 2009 This time the trip was a family trip with me (Char), Mark, Amber and Buddy. We swung down into Winnemucca, then over to Elko and back home through Wildhorse. I had heard from a few of the locals that it had rained there every day for the past 30 days. One of the gals in the assessors office let me know that she had seen wildflowers blooming that she had never seen before! I read in the Elko newspaper that it was the second wettest June on record, the first being in 1913 and the records go back to 1888! A total of 10.71 inches of rain has fallen since October 1, 2008, well above the average water year of 9.59 inches - and there's still a few more months to go! We were amazed at the fabulous green scapes that draped the hills and valleys. It was so incredibly beautiful!!

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has issued a draft study of the proposed $3 billion Ruby Pipeline that would go through Elko County carrying natural gas from Wyoming through Utah and Nevada and into Oregon. We happened to own 40 acres of land that this proposed 50 foot easement goes through and we recently granted an easement to Ruby Pipeline for this. I thought this would improve the road to the property. The project will require about 3000 workers to complete including 100 or so in the Elko and Wells area and it is estimated the investment in Elko County would be $716 million. Wow again! As always I will keep my ears open for more information on this.

The big "E" on the Elko Hills with the Ruby Mountains looming behind them - you can see Ruby Dome still had plenty of snow on her!

These next pictures were taken about 10 miles NE of Elko near River Valley Ranches. The Ruby Mountains had snow in her peaks still and the valley and Adobe Range were so green!

Amber playing ball with Buddy - he was so happy to get out of the truck for a while and play ball!

The hillsides were so green and thats the North Fork of the Humboldt River flowing through the valley below:

These next photos were taken of Wildhorse - beautiful pelicans were enjoying the afternoon along with lots of fishermen and campers!

Update May 2009:My first chance to see Elko County this spring was a beautiful welcome sight! The reeds along the Humboldt River were a beautiful orangish/red and the valley was green. The Ruby Mountains were loaded with snow and Pilot Peak out by Montello still had quite a bit on her as well! I noticed a new building along the main drag in town and was told it is one of the mining companies moving headquarters into town! A local realtor was saying that although the prices of land had dropped the prices in Elko had remained strong with only a slight drop in value. And the mines and mineral exploration continue to do very well.

An article in the Wall Street Journal in April 2009 stated "Mining companies are keeping the construction industry humming and adding jobs in mountainous Elko, Nev. Gold fever has inoculated this historic cow town from the state's economic malaise, making it an island of relative prosperity in a state flooded with unemployed workers." It goes on to discuss the impact the price of gold is having on Elko at over $800 an ounce, tight rental-housing market and the thousand of job applications the mines are receiving compared to a year ago when they were having to hold job fairs to attract workers.

Beautiful reddish/orange reeds lined the Humboldt River!

Elko County is located in northeastern Nevada, 295 miles east of Reno and 237 miles west of Salt Lake City. Click Here for Elko's road map. With 17,135 square miles it is one of the largest counties in the USA. A book listing American towns with the highest quality of life declared Elko, Nevada, "The Best Small Town in America." It is a small city, and a booming trading and service center for a mining and ranching area.

If is a very friendly town where it is common to see kids with belt buckles bigger than themselves being worn proudly! I am always up for a trip to Elko County to explore land and have actually saved a 20 acre piece there for myself in hopes of watching it snow on the Ruby Mountains some year! Enjoy the pictures from my journey below but be sure and click on the Elko County link to see the rest!

The rest of the pictures below were taken on our many visits to Elko. For more pictures from our journeys and information about the area be sure and click on our Elko County web page link below!

Wild horses in Pilot Valley on the east side of the county near Wendover and Montello! I've seen them twice now out there - fabuluos!

The bright lights of Wendover at night! Wendover is a bustling little gambling town located on the Nevada/Utah State line:

The famous Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. With over 12,000 acres this area is a special habitat to over 207 species of birds providing feeding, nesting and a resting stop in the Pacific Flyway. I asked these two men from California, who had just came from fishing down at Ruby Lake, if this was their favorite fishing place in this county and they let me know that this was the best fishing place in the state!

Wildhorse Reservoir north of Elko and a cattle drive near Wildhorse on one of my first trips ever to Elko! My job doesn't get any better than that!
